The formula
decimal hours = hours + (minutes ÷ 60)
example: 7 h 45 m → 7 + (45 ÷ 60) = 7.75
minutes = (decimal hours − whole hours) × 60
example: 7.75 h → (7.75 − 7) × 60 = 45 minutes
How to convert time to decimal hours
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the whole hours. 3 hours 20 minutes is 3 + (20 ÷ 60) = 3.33 hours; 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75. Payroll systems and timesheet exports call the result decimal time, and it is the form every hourly invoice line expects.
Every minute from 1 to 60 is in the chart below, so the values that come up most on a timesheet — 10 minutes is 0.17, 25 minutes is 0.42, 30 minutes is 0.50 — are a lookup rather than a sum.

How to convert decimal hours back to time
Take the whole number as the hours and multiply what is left by 60. 6.4 hours is 6 hours and 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes, so 6:24. Three are worth knowing by heart: 0.25 is 15 minutes, 0.5 is 30 minutes, 0.75 is 45 minutes.
This is the direction a payroll export or a tracker CSV usually leaves you in — a column of decimals that has to become something a person can read against a schedule. If that schedule is kept on a 24-hour clock, the military time converter reads it back into AM and PM.

Why invoices and payroll use decimal hours
Sixty-minute hours are fine for reading a clock and terrible for arithmetic. You cannot multiply 7:45 by an hourly rate without converting it first, and you cannot add a column of times like 1:20, 0:35 and 2:50 without carrying minutes by hand. Decimal hours remove the base-60 problem: 7.75 × $90 is one multiplication, and a column of decimals adds up the way every spreadsheet, payroll system and invoice line already expects.
That is why timesheets, payroll runs and hourly invoices are almost always expressed in decimals. The conversion is the same in both directions and it is exact — 45 minutes is three quarters of an hour, so it is 0.75, not 0.45. Writing 7.45 when you meant 7:45 is the single most common way an hour gets mispriced, and it always costs the person doing the billing.
Round once, at the invoice line
Rounding is where decimal hours quietly leak money. If you round every individual entry up or down and then add them together, the errors compound and the total drifts from the work you actually did. Round once, at the line that goes on the invoice, and keep the raw minutes underneath it — that way the number is defensible if a client asks how you got there.
Pick one increment and apply it the same way every time. Six minutes (0.1 h) is the traditional professional-services unit; fifteen minutes (0.25 h) is the common freelance one. Whichever you choose, round to the nearest unit rather than always rounding down “to be safe” — always rounding down is a discount you never agreed to give, repeated on every line of every invoice. Say which increment you use in your contract, and then the rounding stops being a conversation.
